How to choose

Thirteen tours leave Bilbao, only three enter the Guggenheim

Bilbao sells the region harder than it sells itself. Thirteen of the 24 experiences we list leave the city altogether, a median of nine hours each, from €45 to €250. Five make for the San Juan de Gaztelugatxe headland, one of them sold under its Game of Thrones name. Four run east to San Sebastián and the Gipuzkoa coast, and three of the thirteen carry on into France for Biarritz, Bayonne, Saint-Jean-de-Luz or Hendaye, two of those counted in the San Sebastián group as well. The last three drive south to Rioja, and two of them are the dearest things on this page, at €250 and €225 against a €90 alternative. Median length across all 24 listings: six hours.

The eleven listings that stay put are short, median three hours, and mostly about eating. Four are pintxos or food-and-wine walks at €75 to €105, plus a €125 paella and burnt Basque cheesecake class; those five hold 2,131 of the page's 5,014 reviews, and the €105 walk carries 1,203 of them by itself. The Guggenheim, the reason most people come, accounts for three: a 90-minute guided visit at €65, two hours in a small group at €95, and a €27.90 entry ticket rated 3.3 from 15 reviews, the weakest score here. That leaves one €35 walking tour and two e-bike rides at €49. No listing enters the Fine Arts Museum or Azkuna Zentroa, rides the Artxanda funicular, or goes out on the river.

What to know before you book in Bilbao

The museum sets the calendar, not the tour operators. The Guggenheim normally opens Tuesday to Sunday, with seasonal and holiday Monday exceptions, and it asks you to check its official calendar and buy the ticket that matches your date. Our three Guggenheim listings run €27.90 for entry alone, €65 guided for 90 minutes and €95 for the two-hour small group, so the guide costs roughly €37 to €67 above the bare ticket.

Those two ticketed Guggenheim listings are also the only two of the 24 without free cancellation, so fix your date before you book either. The other named sights you arrange yourself: the Fine Arts Museum keeps its own calendar and normally closes on Tuesdays, the Artxanda funicular leaves from the lower station at Plaza del Funicular and its service is worth checking before you walk over, and a guided visit to Azkuna Zentroa is booked separately with its own language arrangements.

Quick answers

Is a Guggenheim guided tour worth it, or should I just buy a ticket?

The museum sells dated tickets through its own calendar, and it normally opens Tuesday to Sunday with seasonal and holiday Monday exceptions, so entry is something you can settle yourself. Of our three listings, the cheapest is entry alone at €27.90, and it is the lowest-rated item on this page at 3.3 from 15 reviews. A guide costs €65 for 90 minutes or €95 for two hours in a small group. Those two entry-carrying listings are the only ones here without free cancellation.

How do I get to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe from Bilbao?

Five of the 24 listings go, including one sold under its Game of Thrones name, and they run six to eleven hours at €45 to €89. The two cheapest are the two longest: eleven hours at €45, adding Bermeo, Mundaka, Gernika and a txakoli stop. The six-hour versions cost €60 and €89, and the €89 one carries 889 reviews, more than any other day trip here. All five cancel free.

Which Bilbao food tour should I book?

Four walks cover pintxos and wine, all three hours except one of three and a half, at €75, €99, €100 and €105, rated 4.9 or 5.0. Weight of opinion sits with the €105 tour, which holds 1,203 reviews against 427, 317 and 184 for the others. If you would rather cook than walk, a three-and-a-half-hour paella and burnt Basque cheesecake class runs €125, rated 5.0 from 64 reviews. All five cancel free.
