Prices are starting prices in EUR and may vary by date, group size and option. Check availability and full terms on Viator before booking.

Search covers the whole collection for this city, not just the experiences shown. Price, length and sorting are applied before the list is built; when a search is running, price and length are applied to the results on this page. The featured order may reflect reviews, popularity, bookings and payments from operators.

How to choose

Fourteen boat trips, nine of them architecture cruises

Fourteen of the 24 Chicago experiences we list are boat trips, and nine of those put the word architecture in the title. The concentration shows in the reviews as well: the two busiest listings are both river architecture cruises, and between them they hold 27,945 of the 62,384 reviews on this page. The remaining boats vary the route rather than the subject — a 45-minute run from the Magnificent Mile at €24.66, a speedboat, a fireboat, a sunset cruise on Lake Michigan, a night cruise and a ghost-themed one. The median listed duration across all 24 is 90 minutes, the length of the standard river circuit, and half of the 24 cost under €40.

On land the set is thin and repetitive. There are three walking tours, two of them food tours: a three-hour tasting walk and a three-hour Chinatown walk, both rated 4.9. Crime and ghost stories appear twice, as a two-hour gangsters-and-ghosts walk and as a 4.6-rated crime and mob bus tour. Four listings are admissions rather than tours — Skydeck at €38.75, 360 Chicago at €26.42, Flyover at €24.61 and a CityPASS at €126.81 valid for nine days — and the two observation decks rate 4.3 and 3.9, below every architecture cruise we carry. No listing goes beyond the city, none is sold as private, and no museum appears anywhere in the 24.

What to know before you book in Chicago

The cruise season is the real constraint. The Chicago Architecture Center runs its 90-minute cruise several times a day from March to November, leaving from the dock at the south-east corner of the Michigan Avenue Bridge at Wacker Drive; that is the First Lady listing here, €50.20 and rated 4.9 from 7,077 reviews. It is also one of only two listings that cannot be cancelled free.

Not every line here is worth paying for. Lincoln Park Zoo is free and open every day of the year, and every Skydeck ticket already includes The Ledge on the 103rd floor, so the only decision is the time slot, as Skydeck hours change with the season. Between neighbourhoods, tap a contactless card or phone on CTA trains and buses, or use a Ventra card, rather than the €43.15 open-top bus, which rates 3.9.

Quick answers

Which Chicago architecture river cruise should I book?

Nine of our 24 listings are architecture cruises, so the question is which operator rather than whether to go. The two with the most reviews are a 4.8-rated cruise at €34.35 running 60 to 90 minutes, and a 4.7-rated 90-minute tour at €39.63. The Chicago Architecture Center's own cruise aboard First Lady is the dearest of the nine at €50.20 and is rated 4.9; it sails several times a day from March to November.

Do I need a tour to visit the Art Institute of Chicago?

No tour in our Chicago list includes a museum, the Art Institute among them, so entry is something you arrange yourself. Check the day before you fix your plan: the museum is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, opens 11:00 to 17:00 on Monday and Friday to Sunday, and stays open until 20:00 on Thursdays. The only multi-attraction product we carry is the CityPASS at €126.81, listed with nine days of validity.

Is Skydeck or 360 Chicago better?

Both are sold here as plain admission rather than guided visits, at €38.75 for Skydeck and €26.42 for 360 Chicago. Skydeck holds the higher rating of the two, 4.3 against 3.9, from 1,931 and 1,311 reviews. Every Skydeck ticket includes The Ledge, the glass balconies on the 103rd floor of Willis Tower, and its hours change with the season, so fix the slot before you book.
