How to choose

Fourteen of the 24 tours are Machu Picchu

Fourteen of the 24 experiences we list for Cusco are Machu Picchu, a citadel reached by train from Ollantaytambo rather than a sight in the city you are standing in. Nine of those are single days of 11 to 20 hours, €264.19 to €422.71. Four spread the same ground over 48 hours with the Sacred Valley attached, €374.28 to €462.34. The fourteenth is not a trip at all but the entry itself, Circuit 2 with a guide at €119.06, rated 3.8 from 39 reviews. That block pulls the median duration across the whole page to 14 hours and the median price to €280.04. Eight titles name a train; only two, anywhere on the page, say private.

The ten listings that skip Machu Picchu read as a separate page, with a median price of €61.64 against €376.04 for the Machu Picchu half. Four are Rainbow Mountain days of 11 to 14 hours, €20.92 to €79.26, two of them on quad bikes. Three are Sacred Valley days of eight to twelve hours, €44.91 to €123.29, and one is a six-hour quad ride to Moray and the Maras salt pans at €25.54. Only two stay inside Cusco: five hours around four ruins at €35.23, and a four-hour cooking class with a market visit at €57.24. No trek appears in any title, and three of these ten hold 12,333 of the page's 22,036 reviews.

What to know before you book in Cusco

Entry to Machu Picchu is not free, but it is sold to you directly. The Ministry of Culture takes bookings on tuboleto.cultura.pe, and the Centro Cultural in Machupicchu Pueblo releases 1,000 tickets a day in person. Foreign adults pay S/152 plus the S/11 conservation fee introduced on 1 May 2026, roughly S/163 in all; students pay S/77 and children aged 3 to 17 S/70. There are three circuits, entry begins at 6:00, and high season allows 45 minutes' tolerance.

The rest of the bill is transport. PeruRail's first Expedition trains leave Ollantaytambo at 5:05 and 6:10 on a journey of about an hour and a half, and returns run from 5:35 to 21:50, most between 13:37 and 18:20. The Consettur bus from the town up to the citadel costs foreign adults $23 one way or $35 return, first at 5:30 and last at 16:00. Only four of the 14 Machu Picchu listings cancel free, against all ten of the rest.

Quick answers

Do I need a tour to visit Machu Picchu from Cusco?

No. The Ministry of Culture sells entry itself through tuboleto.cultura.pe, and the Centro Cultural in Machupicchu Pueblo puts 1,000 tickets a day on sale in person, at S/152 for foreign adults plus the S/11 conservation fee in force since 1 May 2026. What the nine single-day tours here add for €264.19 to €422.71 is the train, the bus up at $23 one way or $35 return, and a guide, gathered into one booking. If you want the door alone, one listing sells it: Circuit 2 with a guide at €119.06 for three to five hours, rated 3.8 from 39 reviews. Note that mountain routes, including Huayna Picchu, Machu Picchu Mountain and the Gran Caverna, are priced separately.

How long is a Machu Picchu day trip from Cusco?

The nine single-day runs we list take 11 to 20 hours, which is what drags the median across all 24 experiences to 14 hours. The citadel admits visitors from 6:00, the first bus up leaves at 5:30 and climbs for about 25 minutes, and the first trains from Ollantaytambo go at 5:05 and 6:10 on a ride of roughly an hour and a half. Return trains run as late as 21:50, though most leave between 13:37 and 18:20. Four listings avoid the long day by spreading it over 48 hours with the Sacred Valley, €374.28 to €462.34.

What else is worth booking in Cusco besides Machu Picchu?

Ten of the 24 go somewhere else, and they cost far less: a median of €61.64 against €376.04. Four are Rainbow Mountain days of 11 to 14 hours from €20.92 to €79.26, three are Sacred Valley days of eight to twelve hours from €44.91 to €123.29, and one is a six-hour quad ride to Moray and the Maras salt pans at €25.54. Inside Cusco itself there are only two: five hours around four ruins at €35.23, and a four-hour cooking class with a market tour at €57.24. All ten allow free cancellation.
