How to choose

Short tours stay in town, long ones leave

Frankfurt's page mostly points at other towns. Sixteen of the 23 experiences we list leave the city altogether, and Heidelberg is named in four of them, more often than anything in Frankfurt itself. Three run to the Rhine Valley, naming Rüdesheim, the Loreley or a vineyard tasting; Rothenburg, Strasbourg and the Black Forest appear twice each, and Cologne, Trier and the Moselle at Eltz Castle once each. Two are seven-day coach tours that finish in Prague, Budapest, Paris or Amsterdam. The busiest excursion is the €149 Rhine Valley day, 1,265 reviews at 4.1. The median duration across all 23 listings is eight hours, the median price €245, and nothing that leaves town runs under five and a half hours.

The seven that stay in Frankfurt are all short: none passes three hours, while every excursion starts at five and a half. Three are walking tours at €30, €40 and €45, and the €30 one is the most reviewed product here, 4.9 from 1,350 reviews. A one-hour cruise on the Main at €17 is the cheapest listing and the lowest rated, 3.8 from 117. The rest are a hotrod drive, a €116 private evening tour with no reviews yet, and a €160 private history walk. Six titles are sold as private tours. Thirteen of the 23 carry fewer than 25 reviews, and no listing names the Städel, the Senckenberg, the Historical Museum or Main Tower.

What to know before you book in Frankfurt

No listing here sells museum entry, and the two central museums keep different weeks. The Städel normally closes on Mondays. The Historical Museum, at the Saalhof beside the river, normally opens Tuesday to Sunday and has a final admission window, so check that time and build the afternoon backwards from it rather than from closing.

Main Tower's public observation deck is a separate visitor experience with its own admission and conditions, so check both before planning an evening around the view. Kleinmarkthalle normally closes on Sundays, so confirm the weekly hours before fixing a market morning. Palmengarten keeps shorter winter hours and lists its display houses separately. Twenty of the 23 listings cancel free; the cruise and the two seven-day tours do not.

Quick answers

Is a Heidelberg day trip from Frankfurt worth booking?

Heidelberg is named in four of the 23 listings, more often than any other place. The two shortest run five and a half hours: a shared castle and old town tour at €129, rated 4.2 from 629 reviews, and a private day tour at €125, rated 4.7 from 370. Those two also carry most of the evidence on this page. A six-and-a-half-hour private version costs €152.25, and a nine-and-a-half-hour day pairing Heidelberg with Rothenburg costs €275 at 4.8 from 22 reviews; all four cancel free.

What can I do in Frankfurt on a Monday?

Move the museums, not the day. The Städel normally closes on Mondays and the Historical Museum at the Saalhof normally opens Tuesday to Sunday, so Monday is the day to spend on one of the 16 listings that leave town, the shortest of which is five and a half hours. Kleinmarkthalle is the opposite case: it normally closes on Sundays, so check its weekly hours before planning a market morning.

Do I need a guided tour to see Frankfurt's old town?

Three of the 23 listings are city walking tours: €30 for two to three hours, €40 for two hours and €45 for three. The €30 tour holds 1,350 reviews at 4.9, by far the most on this page, while five of the seven city-based products have fewer than 25 reviews each. None of them includes admission to anything: no listing here names the Städel, the Senckenberg, the Historical Museum or Main Tower, whose observation deck is a separate visitor experience with its own admission and conditions.
