How to choose

Los Angeles sells the drive, not the entry

Ten of the 22 experiences we list for Los Angeles are the same journey by road: Hollywood, Beverly Hills and a beach, seen through a windscreen. Six of them name Hollywood and Beverly Hills in the title alone. Nine are guided, and those nine carry 14,986 of the 25,478 reviews on the page; the tenth is a hop-on hop-off bus. The nine run from two hours to eight and cost between €27.13 and €113.60, with one private van at €262.94. What is absent says as much: no walking tour, no food tour, and nothing built around a museum. Downtown appears exactly once, as a 35-minute helicopter flight at €250.99. The median listing is 2.4 hours.

The rest of the page leaves that corridor. Four listings depart from Long Beach, and the three cheapest things here are all boats: two swan-boat rentals at €11.45 each and a 45-minute harbour trip at €13.21. Two more sit on Catalina Island, and at 50 minutes and two hours they tour Avalon rather than reach it. One trip leaves the basin altogether, ten to twelve hours out to Joshua Tree at €192.86. The Warner Bros studio tour is the only backlot ticket and the second most reviewed item, 4.6 from 5,644. All three listings rated below 4.0 — 3.6, 3.4 and 3.1 — are unguided tickets or passes, and the only two sold without free cancellation are a horseback ride and the Disneyland ticket.

What to know before you book in Los Angeles

The museums and viewpoints these tours drive past charge nothing to enter. Griffith Observatory is free, open Tuesday to Friday 12:00–22:00 and at weekends 10:00–22:00. The Broad's general admission is free, with advance tickets released monthly and a standby line on the day. The Getty Center is free but needs a timed-entry reservation. All three close on Mondays, and Getty parking costs $25 per car, less later in the day.

Reaching them costs little. Metro buses and trains take a contactless card with two hours of free transfers, and the DASH Observatory shuttle climbs from Vermont/Sunset station to Griffith daily 10:00–22:00, every 20 to 25 minutes, for 50 cents. Among the sights that do charge, Hollyhock House is
