Finding experiences in New York…

Prices are starting prices in EUR and may vary by date, group size and option. Check availability and full terms on Viator before booking.

Search covers the whole collection for this city, not just the experiences shown. Price, length and sorting are applied before the list is built; when a search is running, price and length are applied to the results on this page. The featured order may reflect reviews, popularity, bookings and payments from operators.

How to choose

New York's tours sell height and water

Fifteen of the 24 experiences we list for New York are either above the city or on the water. Eight are harbour cruises, five include a paid observation deck — SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, the Empire State Building, Edge, Top of the Rock and One World Observatory — and two are helicopter flights lasting 12 to 15 minutes. Six of the 24 name the Statue of Liberty. Nothing on the list leaves the city, and there is not one walking tour, food tour or hands-on class among the 24. The median length is one hour 45 minutes, half the products cost under €45, and all but one allow free cancellation.

That shape follows from the city. The grid makes Manhattan easy to cover unguided and the subway is a flat $3 fare, so almost nothing here is sold as walking you around; what is sold is altitude and the harbour, the two vantage points you cannot reach on foot. The exceptions are small and worth noting. The two Central Park pedicab tours are the only products rated 5.0, on 8,426 and 7,542 reviews. The most reviewed products are guided tours rather than tickets, at 14,757 and 13,766 reviews. The lowest rated is the 24-hour open-top bus pass, 3.5 from 4,954 reviews, which is also the longest listing in the set.

What to know before you book in New York

Every Statue of Liberty listing runs on the same boat. Statue City Cruises is the only ferry company the National Park Service authorises, and its Manhattan ticket office sits inside Castle Clinton in The Battery. What differs between the six is the guide and the departure slot, not the crossing. Crown access is by advance reservation only, and every ticket holder must show photo ID matching the name on the ticket.

Two of the things people book tours around cost nothing. The 9/11 Memorial is free and open every day from 8:00 to 20:00; only the Museum needs a ticket, and that must be bought in advance. The High Line is free daily from 7:00 to 22:00. Check the weekday as well: The Met Fifth Avenue is closed on Wednesdays.

Quick answers

Do I need a tour to see the Statue of Liberty?

No. Statue City Cruises runs the only ferry the National Park Service authorises, and it sells tickets directly from its office inside Castle Clinton in The Battery. The six Liberty products in our list add a guide and a fixed departure to that same crossing. Crown access is the one thing you must reserve in advance, and it requires photo ID matching the name on the ticket.

Which New York observation deck should I book?

Our list carries four standalone deck tickets — Edge at €36, Top of the Rock at €40, SUMMIT One Vanderbilt at €42 and the Empire State Building at €44 — plus One World Observatory inside a €96 combined 9/11 product. The four sit within €8 of each other, so the decision is the view and the time of day rather than the price. They are listed at anything from 45 minutes to three hours.

Is the hop-on hop-off bus worth it in New York?

It is the lowest rated product in our list, 3.5 from 4,954 reviews, at €54.60 for 24 hours and 19 stops. A subway or local bus ride costs $3, and with OMNY every further ride is free once you have paid for 12 within seven days on the same card or phone. So the open-top bus is buying commentary and a top deck, not cheaper transport.
