How to choose

Seven Hallstatt day trips, two old-town walks

Eleven of the 24 experiences we list name somewhere outside Salzburg, and seven of those eleven are Hallstatt: a 5.5-hour half-day at €85, three eight-hour small-group or minivan days at €139 each, a ten-hour Super Saver that adds the Sound of Music at €140, and two private days at €329 and €760. The other four head for Berchtesgaden and the Eagle's Nest (€105), the salt mines and the Bavarian mountains (€90), a nine-hour pairing of the salt mines with the Sound of Music (€140), and a one-way private transfer to Vienna with four hours of sightseeing on the way (€320). Eight listings run seven hours or longer. The median across all 24 is four hours and €107.

In town, the list is mostly seated or eaten. Six of the 24 are concerts: four at Hohensalzburg, one in the Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace at €39, one Mozart dinner concert at €85. Those four are the fortress's only appearance here, and none of them is a daytime visit to it. Three are apple strudel cooking classes of 90 to 120 minutes, all rated 4.9. Only two listings are guided old-town walks, €35 shared and €164.30 private. The Original Sound of Music tour holds 6,681 reviews, almost five times any other listing, at €75 for four hours; the private version of the same four hours is €600. No title names Hellbrunn, either Mozart museum or the Mönchsberg art museum, and the river appears only inside a €109 concert and dinner package.

What to know before you book in Salzburg

The places this page does not sell are the ones you arrange yourself. Mozart's Birthplace is on Getreidegasse and the Mozart Residence at Makartplatz 8 — two houses, two visits — so check combined-ticket validity against the days you mean to use it. Hohensalzburg ticket products cover different areas and may include different transport options; pick the one whose funicular option suits your day and check last admission.

Hellbrunn's palace and trick fountains operate seasonally and have their own last entry, while the public gardens keep a different schedule, so check both before committing an afternoon to the trip out. For hilltop art, the Mönchsberg venue is the one to aim at and its exhibition calendar is worth reading first; the Rupertinum in the old town is a separate building. All 24 listings cancel free.

Quick answers

Is the Original Sound of Music tour worth booking?

It is the most reviewed listing on this page by a wide margin: 6,681 reviews at 4.7, €75 for four hours. A private version of the same four hours costs €600, and two Super Saver bundles pair it with Hallstatt or with the salt mines at €140 each, running nine to ten hours. Our own three-day Salzburg plan leaves it out, because it travels beyond the city and would replace a substantial part of a day.

Do I need a tour to get from Salzburg to Hallstatt?

We list seven Hallstatt trips, and what they sell is the transport and the shape of the day rather than any admission. The cheapest is 5.5 hours at €85, three eight-hour small-group or minivan days cost €139, and the private options are €329 and €760. The only three listings on this page rated 5.0 are all Hallstatt days, though each has fewer than 120 reviews behind it. All seven cancel free.

Do I need a guided tour of Hohensalzburg Fortress?

Nobody here offers one. The fortress appears in four of the 24 listings and all four are evening concerts, from €43 for the 90-minute concert alone to €130 with a VIP dinner. Daytime entry is a ticket you buy yourself, and the choice matters: ticket products cover different areas and may include different transport options, so select the funicular option that matches your plan and check last admission.
