How to choose

Six food and wine tours hold half the reviews

Toulouse's shelf is built on eating and drinking. Six of the 22 experiences we list are food or wine: a four-hour chef-led food and history tour at €110, which carries 629 reviews, more than anything else here; a 210-minute Victor Hugo market tasting at €115 with 373; a 210-minute food tour billed as a full French meal at €80; a 150-minute round of wine bars with a local expert at €105; a €85 gourmet visit with a local guide; and a three-hour Gourmand bike ride at €67. Those six hold 1,186 of the page's 2,328 reviews, so more than half the opinion here sits on under a third of the listings. All six are rated 4.9 or better, though two of them have fewer than twenty reviews. The median length across all 22 is two and a quarter hours.

The rest divides into days out and a cheap self-guided layer. Four trips leave town and they split sharply by price: two coach days with audio guides at €29.90 each, to Albi and Cordes and to Carcassonne, rated 4.1 and 3.8; and two eight-hour small-group days at €195 for Albi, Cordes and Gaillac and €190 to Lourdes, rated 4.6 and 4.9. Those two coach days, with the €16.90 hour on the sightseeing bus at 3.9, are the weakest scores on the page. Three self-guided routes around the centre cost €2.99, €6.99 and €7.49, against €13 and €35 for the two guided walks and €47 and €47.54 for the two private ones. No listing here is built on the Capitole, the Jacobins, Saint-Sernin, the Musée Saint-Raymond, Fondation Bemberg, Les Abattoirs or the Muséum, the only admission ticket sold is Aeroscopia at €15, and for a city on the Garonne there is no boat at all.

What to know before you book in Toulouse

Not one of the centre's sights is sold on this page, so admission is something you arrange yourself and the weekly calendar decides the order of your days. The Couvent des Jacobins normally opens Tuesday to Sunday, with Thursday given over to accompanied groups by reservation, so confirm individual access; its ticketed convent spaces are separate from the church. The Musée Saint-Raymond, next to the basilica, normally opens Tuesday to Sunday.

Les Abattoirs normally opens Wednesday to Sunday from noon, so an art afternoon cannot fall on a Monday or Tuesday. The Muséum normally opens Tuesday to Sunday and shuts for an annual period, worth checking against your dates. Fondation Bemberg's Monday opening varies by season, and its permanent-collection ticket does not automatically include a temporary exhibition. All 22 listings here cancel free.

Quick answers

Are the Toulouse food tours worth the money?

They are what this page is built on. Six of our 22 listings are food or wine, from €67 for a three-hour Gourmand bike ride to €115 for the 210-minute Victor Hugo market tasting, and between them they hold 1,186 of the page's 2,328 reviews. The chef-led four-hour tour at €110 has 629 of those at 5.0. None of the central monuments is sold here, so this is where the guided money on this page actually goes, and every listing cancels free.

How do I get to Carcassonne or Albi from Toulouse?

Four listings leave town. Albi with Cordes and Carcassonne are each sold as a coach day with audio guides at €29.90, rated 4.1 from 92 reviews and 3.8 from 84 respectively, both listed as full days. The small-group alternative is longer on guiding and far dearer: eight hours to Albi, Cordes and Gaillac at €195, rated 4.6, or eight hours to Lourdes at €190, rated 4.9 but from only seven reviews.

What is open in Toulouse on a Monday?

Less than you would want. The Jacobins, the Musée Saint-Raymond and the Muséum all normally open Tuesday to Sunday, Les Abattoirs only Wednesday to Sunday, and Fondation Bemberg's Monday opening varies by season. That makes Monday the day a booking earns its place: the €29.90 coach days to Albi or Carcassonne, one of the six food and wine tours, or the €15 Aeroscopia ticket. All 22 listings cancel free, so a Monday plan can be moved.
