Old-town Dresden, major art collections and Neustadt

Use three full days, selecting museum collections before buying tickets. The Royal Palace normally closes Tuesdays, while Kügelgenhaus normally opens Wednesday to Sunday; place their shared day accordingly. Check the other museums and any opera-house tour separately. Hotel and station journeys are additional.

Day 1

The rebuilt old town and Albertinum

Visit Frauenkirche and Neumarkt, walk past the Fürstenzug and along Brühl’s Terrace. After lunch, spend a focused afternoon in the Albertinum. Keep the church visit flexible around religious services and protect the museum’s admission window.

1Reconstructed church and square

Frauenkirche and Neumarkt

Start with Neumarkt and the visitor-accessible church interior. Read the reconstruction story and give the space time; the dome climb requires its own entry and a longer allowance.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Worship and concerts take priority; dome access is separate

Fürstenzug

Walk the length of the tiled procession and look at its sequence of figures. This is a short outdoor stop on the way toward the Elbe, not a separate museum visit.

  • Plan about 30 min
  • Keep the passage clear and watch for local traffic

3Riverside promenade

Brühl’s Terrace

Follow a selected section of the raised terrace, pausing for views across the Elbe. The allowance includes the steps and a short rest rather than a long river walk.

  • Plan about 45 min
  • Use a suitable access route if stairs are difficult

Midday

LunchTake lunch near the old-town route before the Albertinum galleries.

Afternoon

Albertinum

Spend a focused afternoon with the paintings and sculpture currently on display. Choose a manageable route through the galleries rather than attempting every exhibition.

  • Plan about 2 h 30 min
  • Check the current galleries and last admission; museum hours govern the afternoon

Evening

DinnerChoose dinner in the old town. A dome climb or concert needs additional time.

Day 2

Zwinger art and the opera square

Explore the Zwinger courtyards, then give the Old Masters a substantial morning visit. After lunch, take a booked Semperoper tour if a suitable slot exists, otherwise enjoy Theaterplatz and the exterior. Finish with the cathedral when sightseeing is allowed.

Zwinger courtyards

Explore the accessible outdoor courtyards and façades before the gallery visit. This stop covers the architecture outside; it does not add the Porcelain Collection or Mathematical-Physical Salon.

  • Plan about 45 min
  • Outdoor access and individual museum tickets are different

Old Masters Picture Gallery

Give the Old Masters a focused two-and-a-half-hour visit in the Semper Building. Select the rooms that interest you and leave the other Zwinger collections for a future visit.

  • Plan about 2 h 30 min
  • Check the gallery’s opening day and ticket coverage

Midday

LunchHave lunch after the gallery rather than rushing through its last rooms for a tour.

3Opera house and square

Semperoper and Theaterplatz

Explore Theaterplatz and use a prebooked guided interior visit if a suitable slot is available. Without that booking, enjoy the exterior and an unhurried square walk; a performance is a separate evening plan.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Tours depend on the opera schedule and require a suitable reservation

4Cathedral

Dresden Cathedral

Visit the public cathedral interior when sightseeing is allowed. Keep this modest church visit separate from the palace collections next door.

  • Plan about 45 min
  • Check access around religious services

Evening

DinnerDinner can precede a separately booked performance. Leave time for theatre arrival and cloakroom arrangements.

Day 3

Royal Palace collections and Neustadt

Begin at the Royal Palace near opening and choose a three-hour collection route. After lunch, cross Augustus Bridge, pass the Golden Rider and continue to Kügelgenhaus, arriving with enough time before its afternoon closing. If you reserve the Historic Green Vault, fit its timed entry inside the palace allowance by reducing other collections.

1Palace museum complex

Royal Palace and selected collections

Choose a three-hour route through the palace collections, such as the New Green Vault, Armoury and State Apartments. The Historic Green Vault needs its own timed ticket and should replace part of this route rather than being added after every collection.

  • Plan about 3 h
  • Normally closed Tuesdays; distinguish the Historic Green Vault time ticket from the regular palace ticket

Midday

LunchTake lunch near the palace, then keep the river crossing and monument stops short enough for the museum.

2Elbe crossing

Augustus Bridge

Cross the bridge toward Neustadt with time to look back at the old-town skyline. The allowance is for this crossing and its views, not a long walk on both riverbanks.

  • Plan about 30 min
  • Use the pedestrian route and allow for crossings at the ends

3Monument and pedestrian street

Golden Rider and Hauptstraße

Pause at the equestrian monument, then continue along a short stretch of Hauptstraße toward the museum. This is an outdoor landmark stop rather than an additional indoor attraction.

  • Plan about 20 min
  • Leave enough time for the museum’s afternoon closing

4Historic house museum

Kügelgenhaus Museum of Dresden Romanticism

Visit the rooms and displays in the former Kügelgen home for a focused introduction to Dresden’s Romantic-era cultural life. Finish with a gentle walk through the neighbourhood.

  • Plan about 1 h 15 min
  • Normally opens Wednesday to Sunday, with later opening at weekends; check the calendar

Evening

DinnerFinish with dinner in Neustadt or return to the old town. The return to your hotel is additional.

Palace and gallery tickets

3 days in Dresden: quick answers

Does the palace visit include every collection?

No. Choose a manageable three-hour route. The New Green Vault, Armoury and State Apartments are examples; the Historic Green Vault requires a separate timed ticket.

Are the two Green Vaults the same visit?

No. Their ticket arrangements differ. Read the exact ticket coverage before booking and place any timed visit inside the day’s planned museum allowance.

Is a Semperoper tour guaranteed?

No. The base plan works with the exterior and Theaterplatz. Include an interior tour only after confirming a suitable available slot.

Which day should be Wednesday to Sunday?

The Royal Palace and Kügelgenhaus day normally fits those days because of their different closing patterns. Verify the actual calendars for your dates.

Can I add Saxon Switzerland?

That needs a separate excursion day with transport and walking time. Replace a Dresden day rather than appending it to the museum programme.
