Town hall and art, warehouse canals, harbour and gardens

The first day balances a small exhibition with a focused Kunsthalle visit. The second centres on a reserved Miniatur Wunderland entry and the harbour districts. The third combines St. Michaelis, the waterfront and a quieter park finish. Reorder around museum closures and exhibition changeovers. This route leaves the maritime museum, harbour cruises and late-night entertainment as choices for another visit rather than assuming they all fit.

1Civic architecture

Hamburg Rathaus and Rathausmarkt

Study the city hall façade and the square, entering public areas only when permitted. This stop is not a booked tour of the state rooms.

  • Plan about 45 min
  • Official business can limit interior access

2Art exhibition venue

Bucerius Kunst Forum

Give the current exhibition a focused visit in the gallery beside the town hall. There is no permanent display guaranteed between changing exhibitions.

  • Plan about 1 h 15 min
  • Check the exhibition calendar; normal opening begins late in the morning

3Memorial and museum

St. Nikolai Memorial

Visit the former church site as a memorial to war and destruction, with time for the exhibition or tower viewpoint according to your ticket. Its significance extends beyond the skyline view.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Check lift and exhibition access

Midday

LunchChoose lunch in the old town before Chilehaus and the final museum. Keep enough afternoon time for the Kunsthalle’s selected galleries.

5Art museum

Hamburger Kunsthalle

Choose a focused path through the collections or one exhibition of particular interest. The museum is large; two and a half hours does not cover every gallery in depth.

  • Plan about 2 h 30 min
  • Normally closed Mondays; check the current exhibition and room information

Evening

DinnerHave dinner in the centre or around your accommodation. An exhibition-heavy day is better followed by a relaxed evening.

Day 2

Miniature worlds and the working waterfront

Book a morning entry to Miniatur Wunderland and give it several hours. After lunch, walk a selected Speicherstadt route, visit the Elbphilharmonie Plaza, then finish with a short HafenCity waterfront circuit. The concert halls and a harbour cruise are additional activities.

Miniatur Wunderland

Spend an extended morning with the miniature landscapes and moving scenes. Leave time to watch the details; behind-the-scenes tours and evening events are separate bookings.

  • Plan about 3 h 30 min
  • Book an admission time before arranging the rest of the day

Midday

LunchHave lunch in Speicherstadt or HafenCity before the outdoor afternoon. The three-and-a-half-hour exhibition allowance does not include a long meal break.

2Warehouse district

Speicherstadt

Walk a selected route beside the canals and brick warehouses. The allowance covers the outdoor district, not entry into its many museums and attractions.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Follow bridge crossings and public waterfront routes

3Architecture and viewpoint

Elbphilharmonie Plaza

Visit the public Plaza for harbour views and the contrast between the warehouse base and modern upper building. A Plaza ticket does not provide access to a concert or a hall tour.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Check the current Plaza admission terms and reserve your preferred time

4Modern waterfront walk

HafenCity waterfront

Continue through a selected stretch of the modern waterfront around the harbour basins. This is a short outdoor district visit, with no extra museum assumed.

  • Plan about 45 min
  • The district is larger than this route; use the map as an orientation point

Evening

DinnerChoose dinner in HafenCity or return to the centre. Add a concert only with its own ticket, arrival time and a shorter afternoon if necessary.

Day 3

Church, harbour and a garden finish

Visit St. Michaelis and the neighbouring historic courtyard, then head to the landing stages. After lunch, board Rickmer Rickmers before taking transport to Planten un Blomen. Keep the park finish flexible with weather and daylight.

St. Michaelis Church

Visit the church when open to tourists and choose a tower visit if its access suits you. Worship takes priority, and the crypt is a separate choice.

2Historic courtyard

Krameramtsstuben

Step into the permitted historic courtyard for a look at the narrow passage and former grocers’ apartments. The small museum interior is optional and has its own hours.

  • Plan about 30 min
  • Keep the shared passage clear

3Harbour promenade

Landungsbrücken

Walk a selected section of the landing stages and watch the working waterfront. This stop does not assume a harbour cruise or a particular ferry departure.

  • Plan about 45 min
  • Keep operational boarding areas clear

Midday

LunchHave lunch around the harbour before the museum ship. A seated break is useful before its ladders and narrower passages.

4Museum ship

Rickmer Rickmers

Explore the accessible decks and shipboard exhibits of the historic sailing ship. Allow time for the ladders and narrow passages rather than rushing through.

  • Plan about 1 h 15 min
  • Check accessibility and current boarding times
Allow about 30 minutes by public transport or taxi from the waterfront toward a suitable park entrance.

5City park

Planten un Blomen

Finish with a selected garden walk and a relaxed pause. The park’s seasonal planting and open paths are the focus; glasshouses and a scheduled water-light show are not promised.

  • Plan about 1 h 30 min
  • Use the current park map and seasonal opening information

Evening

DinnerHave dinner near the centre. Water-light shows and other park events are seasonal options, not required parts of the route.

Good to know in Hamburg

Reserve the large visits

  • Miniatur Wunderland uses admission time slots and has a date-specific opening calendar. Book entry first; guided extras and special evening events have their own arrangements.Source: Miniatur Wunderland · checked Sep 2026
  • A Plaza visit and a concert are different products. Check current admission terms and reserve the desired entry time; do not assume spontaneous Plaza entry will always be free or available.Source: Elbphilharmonie · checked Sep 2026

Work around the museum calendar

  • Check the Kunsthalle’s opening days and current room information before choosing the art day. Allow more time or drop Bucerius if you want a comprehensive collection visit.Source: Hamburger Kunsthalle · checked Sep 2026
  • Bucerius Kunst Forum presents changing exhibitions and normally opens late in the morning. Check the exhibition calendar before relying on that stop.Source: Bucerius Kunst Forum · checked Sep 2026

3 days in Hamburg: quick answers

Is 3 days enough for Hamburg?

Three full days cover this selection. The International Maritime Museum, a long harbour cruise or more neighbourhood time needs an extra day or a replacement.

Does the Elbphilharmonie stop include a concert hall?

No. The route visits the Plaza. Concerts and hall tours have separate tickets and schedules.

Can I fit every Kunsthalle gallery into the afternoon?

No. Choose a collection area or exhibition. For a broader visit, omit Bucerius and move to the Kunsthalle earlier.

Is a harbour cruise included?

No. Landungsbrücken is a waterfront walk. A cruise needs a separate sailing, ticket and allowance for boarding.

What if the weather is poor?

Shorten the waterfront and park walks and spend longer in one of the selected museums, checking tickets and opening hours first.
