How to choose
Twelve of the nineteen experiences on this page spend their day somewhere other than Hanoi. Seven go to Ninh Bình, every one of them nine to thirteen hours long, from €33.46 for a boat-and-bike day up to €101.27 for the only private version; two name Hoa Lư and Mua Cave in the title, one sells a limousine and a buffet lunch, another a skip-the-line entry. Five more head for Hạ Long or Lan Ha Bay, and three of those sleep aboard: the cheapest overnight is €49.32, against €88.06 for three days and two nights in a balcony cabin and €109.20 for a single night. Nothing here is named for the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Temple of Literature, Hỏa Lò Prison or the water puppets.
The six tours that stay in the city are short and cheap. Five run three to five hours, and three of those are built on eating: a small-group street-food walk at €24.66, an army-jeep food and culture tour at €48.44, and a night motorbike ride led by women at €60.76. Two are named for Train Street, at €21.95 in a jeep and €39.63 privately customised. The single full-day city tour costs €114.48 and is pitched at cruise passengers arriving at Halong port. Median duration across all nineteen is ten hours, median price €48.44, nine listings hold a 5.0 rating, and the jeep food tour alone carries 17,663 reviews, nearly twice the next highest.
No listing here is an admission ticket, and Hanoi's ticketed sights are cheap at the door: the Temple of Literature is 70,000 VND, open 8:00 to 17:00, and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology 40,000 VND, 8:30 to 17:30 and closed on Mondays. The Imperial Citadel closes on Mondays too; Hỏa Lò Prison opens 8:00 to 17:00 every day.
The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is the fixed point to plan around: mornings only, 7:30–10:30 from April to October and 8:00–11:00 from November to March, half an hour later at weekends, closed Mondays and Fridays, and closed entirely from 4 September to 4 November. Water-puppet seats are 100,000–200,000 VND from the theatre itself, at 57B Đinh Tiên Hoàng. Free cancellation applies to all nineteen listings, so settle those dates first.

We list five Hạ Long and Lan Ha Bay options, and the price gap is narrower than it looks. The twelve-hour day tour with Titop Island, a cave and kayaking is €35.23, while the cheapest cruise that sleeps aboard is €49.32; the other two overnights are €88.06 for three days and two nights and €109.20 for a single night. The fifth listing is a seven-hour cruise leaving from the cruise port at €66.05, which only helps if you are already at the bay.
Not for access. No listing on this page is an entry ticket, and the sights charge little at the door: 70,000 VND at the Temple of Literature, 40,000 VND at the Museum of Ethnology. What the six city tours sell is a guide and a vehicle, five of them running three to five hours from €21.95, and three of those six are built around food rather than monuments.
A Monday or a Friday. The seven Ninh Bình tours run nine to thirteen hours, so one of them takes a whole day, and those are the two days a Hanoi plan otherwise loses: the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed on Mondays and Fridays, and the Imperial Citadel and the Museum of Ethnology are closed on Mondays. If you are travelling between 4 September and 4 November the mausoleum is shut for maintenance anyway, so the choice is free.
