Questions
Quick answers
Which days should I plan around?
The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is open only in the morning, closed on Mondays and Fridays and closed altogether from about 4 September to 4 November for maintenance; the Imperial Citadel and the Museum of Ethnology are closed on Mondays. So day two should be a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or weekend day, and day three not a Monday.

3 days in Hanoi
Hanoi's centre is compact and best on foot, so the plan walks two of the three days: day one circles Hoàn Kiếm Lake, crosses to the Ngọc Sơn temple, visits the cathedral and loses itself in the Old Quarter as far as the Đồng Xuân market and the Long Biên bridge, ending with the water puppets; day two covers the Ba Đình monuments in the morning, when the mausoleum is open, then the Imperial Citadel, the Temple of Literature and Hỏa Lò Prison, ending at the Opera House; day three takes a taxi out to the Museum of Ethnology and comes back to the Quán Thánh temple, the Trấn Quốc pagoda and sunset on West Lake. The mausoleum opens only in the morning, is closed on Mondays and Fridays and shuts for about two months every autumn, so check the dates.
