How to choose

Eight of Kyoto's 23 tours are workshops or shows

Eight of the 23 experiences on this page never leave a single venue: a ramen class at €113.55, knife making at a blacksmith for €137.63, two tea ceremonies at €50.47 and €68.82, an hour of Japanese archery at €56.77, a samurai session at €103.23, a one-hour geisha show at €59.64 and a sumo evening with chicken hot pot at €91.76. They run from 45 minutes to three hours, and three of them hold a 5.0 rating. Set against that, no listing is named for Fushimi Inari, Kinkaku-ji or Nishiki Market, and not one of the 23 is a boat trip. The median length here is three and a half hours.

The opposite pole is the whole day. Seven listings run eight hours or more, and four of them take in somewhere outside the city: two Hiroshima and Miyajima days at €82.87 and €103.23, a Kyoto-and-Nara Park day at €47.56, and a private car day that offers Nara as an option. Five listings are private, and those five are the four dearest products here plus one at €94.62, reaching €303.94 at the top. Review counts are dominated by a single item: the shared PERFECT KYOTO bus day at €89.41 carries 17,036, more than the next ten listings put together. Short walks fill the gap between, at €26.42 in Gion and €36.13 in Arashiyama.

What to know before you book in Kyoto

None of the 23 listings is an entry ticket, and admission is set precinct by precinct: Tenryū-ji arranges its garden, its buildings and its Dharma Hall separately, so a walk to the bamboo paths is no promise of an interior. Kiyomizu-dera opens early, but its closing time moves with the season and the night openings are separate calendar events.

Kinkaku-ji's standard hours end in the late afternoon, and the connection from Arashiyama deserves a full transport allowance rather than a straight-line guess — the clearest argument on this page for the €89.41 bus day or a private car. Every one of the 23 cancels free, so you can hold a date while you check current temple hours.

Quick answers

Do I need a guide for Fushimi Inari and Kinkaku-ji?

Neither is named in any of the 23 titles; they turn up inside the full-day tours, which are selling a guide and the transport between sites rather than access. Going alone, the thing to plan around is time: Kinkaku-ji's standard hours end in the late afternoon, and the run from Arashiyama needs a full transport allowance, not a straight-line estimate. Kiyomizu-dera opens early, though its closing time changes with the season.

Is a Hiroshima day trip from Kyoto realistic?

Two listings do it, at €82.87 and €103.23, both given as eight to twelve hours, the longest range on this page. They rate 4.9 from 225 reviews and 4.8 from 380. Both are sold from several cities, so confirm the Kyoto departure point and timing before you book. Leave the evening empty.

Can I photograph geiko and maiko in Gion?

Kyoto's visitor guidance asks people not to photograph or follow geiko and maiko without permission, to keep streets clear and to respect private property, so follow the signs and treat the lanes as somewhere people live and work. If you want to watch a performance instead, five of the 23 listings are built on Gion or geisha: a two-hour district walk at €26.42, the cheapest item here, a one-hour show at €59.64, a sumo evening with hot pot at €91.76, a three-hour Gion food tour at €74.55 and a night food tour at €141.36.
