How to choose

Six Lake Como days, and no Sforza Castle tour

Nine of the 20 experiences we list for Milan spend the whole day outside the city, and six of those nine run to Lake Como, each with a boat leg to Bellagio or Varenna. Two more take the Bernina red train up to St Moritz, one is a Barolo tasting in the Piedmont hills at €179, the dearest listing here, and five of the nine cross into Switzerland. The nine last 10 to 12.5 hours and cost €68 to €179. The median length across all 20 is six and three-quarter hours, a figure nothing in the list matches: nine tours are over within three hours, the nine day trips take ten or more, and the two left over are a Last Supper listing sold with a one-to-six-hour range and a self-guided ticket valid for a day or two.

Inside the city the choice narrows to two buildings. Ten of the 11 remaining listings are built on the Duomo or on Leonardo's Last Supper: six on the cathedral and its terraces, five on the painting, with one three-hour tour at €139 doing both. The five Duomo-only listings hold the cheap end, €24.79 to €76, one of them self-guided through an audio-guide app; they also hold the three lowest ratings on the page, 4.1 and two at 4.2. The four Last Supper-only tours run €69 to €129.40. The eleventh city listing is a cooking class, three hours of pizza and gelato or pasta and tiramisu at €55.18, rated 4.9 from 964 reviews. Nothing here covers the Sforza Castle, Brera, the Ambrosiana, La Scala or the Navigli canals.

What to know before you book in Milan

The Last Supper is a separately reserved visit even if you also enter Santa Maria delle Grazie. Viewing sessions last 15 minutes and the museum asks you to arrive 30 minutes before your booked time, so a 55-minute tour at €129.40 buys you a quarter of an hour in front of the painting. Three of the four listings without free cancellation are Last Supper tours; the other 16 cancel free.

For the Duomo, pick a ticket covering the spaces you mean to enter. Terrace access is by stairs or lift, and the lift only reaches the first terrace level, so the upper level still involves stairs. Nothing on this page covers Brera, the Ambrosiana or La Scala. Brera takes a chosen date and time through its own booking page, the Ambrosiana normally closes on Wednesdays, and a La Scala museum ticket shows you the auditorium only when rehearsals and performances allow.

Quick answers

Do I need a tour to see the Last Supper?

The museum treats it as a separately reserved visit, distinct from entering Santa Maria delle Grazie, and each session lasts 15 minutes with arrival 30 minutes beforehand. Five of our 20 listings include the painting: four cover it alone at €69 to €129.40, and one three-hour tour pairs it with the Duomo at €139. What the booking adds is the reservation and a guide, not more time in the room.

Which Lake Como day trip from Milan should I book?

Six of the 20 go to Lake Como, all of them 10 to 11 hours with a boat leg, at €68 to €139. Four rate 4.8 or better on more than 800 reviews each, while the cheapest, a €68 coach day that also takes in Lugano, rates 4.3 from 605 reviews. A private cruise at €119 shows 5.0, but from a single review, and it is one of the four listings here without free cancellation.

Is a guided Duomo and rooftop tour worth it?

Six listings are built on the cathedral, from €24.79 to €139, and the three lowest-rated items on the page are among them. Duomo tickets cover different spaces, so the point to check is which spaces your ticket includes rather than who sells it. Terrace access is by stairs or lift in every case, and the lift reaches only the first terrace level, so the upper level means stairs whatever you book.
