How to choose

Hallstatt appears more often than any Vienna palace

Count the titles and one name recurs more often than any building in Vienna: Hallstatt, which appears in four of the 24 experiences we list, against three for Schönbrunn and one for the Hofburg. Every Hallstatt listing is a 10- to 14-hour day. Seven of the 24 are full-day trips that leave the city entirely, between 8.5 and 14 hours; four take in Hallstatt, four include Salzburg, and one fits Bratislava and Budapest into twelve hours. Two half-day trips run out to the Vienna Woods and to the countryside wine villages, so nine listings in all spend most of their time outside Vienna. The median duration across the whole set is three hours fifteen minutes.

What is left is unusually seated. Six listings are performances rather than tours: concerts in St Peter's Church, the Karlskirche and the Musikverein, a concert at Schönbrunn, a Strauss dinner show and a 30-minute light piece in the Votive Church, from €22 to €84.15. Only three are skip-the-line palace or museum tours — two at Schönbrunn, one at the Sisi Museum and Hofburg — and only two are ordinary city walking tours. Three are food tours of 3.5 to 5.5 hours. Ratings do not follow price: the top two are a €131.55 food tour (5.0 from 1,235 reviews) and a €20.80 walking tour on the Nazi years (5.0 from 40), while the €23.80 sightseeing bus is the lowest at 4.0.

What to know before you book in Vienna

Schönbrunn's palace tickets carry fixed admission times, and the palace states that genuine tickets are sold online only at imperialtickets.com. What the two guided tours here add, at €55 and €63, is a guide and a booked slot rather than a way round the timing. The park itself opens at 6:30 and is free to enter; the Gloriette, the Privy Garden and the Maze are ticketed separately.

The Belvedere needs a time-slot ticket, bought online or at the ticket office, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00, until 21:00 on Thursdays, closed Mondays. The Naschmarkt is closed on Sundays. A single Wiener Linien ticket covers one journey in one direction with changes allowed; validate a paper ticket before boarding and it lasts 80 minutes, while WienMobil app tickets need no validation. All 24 listings carry free cancellation.

Quick answers

Do I need a guided tour to visit Schönbrunn Palace?

No, but you do need a timed ticket. Palace tickets have fixed admission times, and Schönbrunn states that genuine tickets are sold online only at imperialtickets.com. The two guided tours we list, at €55 and €63 for two to two and a half hours, bundle that slot with a guide. The park is free and opens at 6:30, though the Gloriette, the Privy Garden and the Maze need their own tickets.

Is a Hallstatt day trip from Vienna worth it?

It costs you a whole day. The four Hallstatt trips we list run 10 to 14 hours and cost €65.70 to €100, and they carry the lowest ratings of any group here apart from the sightseeing bus, between 4.2 and 4.6. If you would rather give the day to one place, the small-group Salzburg trip rates 4.8 from 170 reviews at €185.

Which Vienna classical concert should I book?

We list six performances, from €22 to €84.15 and 30 minutes to three hours. The church concerts rate best: St Peter's at 4.7 from 2,382 reviews and the Vivaldi programme at the Karlskirche at 4.7 from 784, against 4.3 for both the costumed Mozart concert at the Musikverein and the Schönbrunn Palace concerts. For the State Opera itself, standing-room tickets are sold on the day of the performance, online from 10:00 or at the standing-room box office from 80 minutes before the start.
