Auckland, day by day
Auckland is a city of 1.7 million people built across 53 volcanoes between two harbours, with a Māori name, Tāmaki Makaurau, that means the place desired by many, a museum on a hill that holds the finest Māori and Pacific collection anywhere, a 328-metre tower, a ferry terminal from which a wine island and a volcano are each half an hour away, and black-sand surf beaches an hour to the west. Start with three days that climb the maunga, see the museum and the gallery, sail to Waiheke, and walk up Rangitoto, with the prices and hours the institutions publish for 2026.
