Old-town Bilbao, two art museums and Artxanda

Use three full days and reorder them around the museums’ different weekly calendars. The funicular stop starts and ends at its lower station; mountain weather can change that outing. Hotel, airport and first-stop journeys are additional. Coastal excursions are separate trips.

Day 1

The old town and river market

Start by Arriaga Theatre, explore Plaza Nueva and nearby lanes, then visit the cathedral. Browse Mercado de la Ribera before lunch while the fresh-food stalls are active. Finish at San Antón and its bridge, with time afterwards for an unhurried old-town pause.

1Theatre exterior and riverside

Arriaga Theatre and Arenal

Begin with the theatre façade and a short circuit of the Arenal riverfront. A guided interior tour or performance requires its own booking and replaces part of the walk.

  • Plan about 45 min
  • The base itinerary is an exterior visit

2Historic square and neighbourhood walk

Plaza Nueva and the old-town lanes

Explore Plaza Nueva and selected streets of the Casco Viejo, leaving time to notice the arcades and changing street pattern. Tastings can fit, while a seated meal has its own break.

  • Plan about 1 h 15 min
  • Choose a short route; shopping and several long bar stops need extra time

3Cathedral

Bilbao Cathedral

Visit the cathedral during sightseeing hours and explore the spaces included in the visitor ticket. Keep worship and ticketed access distinct when planning the morning.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Check admission coverage and current religious services

4Covered market

Mercado de la Ribera

Browse the market’s active food stalls and riverside setting. The fresh-food market and the places serving prepared food have different schedules, so check the part you want to visit.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Visit early enough for the market stalls; do not assume evening food service means all stalls are open

Midday

LunchChoose lunch at the market’s food area or nearby, checking its own hours separately from the market stalls.

Afternoon

5Church and river crossing

San Antón Church and bridge

Visit the church if open, then look at the neighbouring bridge and the river frontage. The church and bridge form one small stop rather than two full attractions.

  • Plan about 45 min
  • Check church visitor hours; the outdoor view is a useful alternative

Evening

DinnerUse the evening for a relaxed pintxos outing or seated dinner in the centre.

Day 2

Guggenheim, the river and Artxanda

Give the Guggenheim a full morning, including selected exterior viewpoints. After lunch, follow the river via Zubizuri to the lower funicular station. Ride up to Artxanda for a viewpoint walk and return to the same station before dinner.

1Modern and contemporary art museum

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

Spend a focused three hours with the galleries and a selected circuit around the building. Include exterior artworks along that circuit without counting each as another destination.

  • Plan about 3 h
  • Book through the museum and check Monday exceptions before choosing the day

Midday

LunchTake lunch after the galleries; a short café break inside the museum does not need to replace the main meal.

2Footbridge and riverside walk

Zubizuri and the riverfront

Follow the river toward Zubizuri, cross the bridge and continue toward the funicular neighbourhood. The hour includes pauses along the water rather than only the bridge crossing.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Use the designated walking surface and take care in wet conditions

3Funicular excursion

Artxanda funicular and viewpoint

Start at the lower station in Plaza del Funicular, ride uphill and take an unhurried viewpoint walk. The allowance includes queues, both rides and the return to the lower station.

  • Plan about 2 h
  • Check operating hours and weather; this is not a walking ascent to the summit

Evening

DinnerAllow an additional journey from the lower station to your dinner or hotel. Keep the outing flexible in poor weather.

Day 3

Fine art, the park and Ensanche

Visit the Fine Arts Museum in the morning, then take lunch before Doña Casilda Park. Continue through Moyúa toward Azkuna Zentroa for the public building and a selected current exhibition if it fits.

  • 4 sights
  • 1.2 km on foot
  • Longest walk 590 m

Midday

LunchChoose lunch near the museum or park and give yourself a break between the two indoor visits.

Doña Casilda Park

Take a relaxed circuit through the park near the museum, with time to sit and enjoy its planted spaces. This is a pause between indoor visits rather than a rushed shortcut.

  • Plan about 1 h 15 min
  • Use public paths and respect any locally restricted garden areas

Moyúa and the Ensanche

Explore Moyúa and a short section of the surrounding streets, looking at the façades along the way toward Azkuna Zentroa. The stop does not promise access inside private buildings.

  • Plan about 45 min
  • Allow time at crossings; the map is an orientation aid

4Cultural centre

Azkuna Zentroa

Explore the public spaces of the former wine warehouse and any exhibition that fits the current programme. The visit centres on the building and culture, with no pool session or performance assumed.

  • Plan about 1 h 30 min
  • Guided visits, events and specialist facilities have separate reservations

Evening

DinnerFinish with dinner in the centre. Events or performances at Azkuna Zentroa require separate timing.

3 days in Bilbao: quick answers

Can I see both art museums in one day?

It is possible with shorter visits, but this plan gives each a separate day so there is time for the city and a proper lunch.

Where does the Artxanda stop begin?

At the lower station in Plaza del Funicular. Its two-hour allowance covers both rides, waiting and the viewpoint walk, ending back below.

Is Mercado de la Ribera open for the same hours as its food area?

Do not assume so. Check fresh-food stall hours separately and visit the market before lunch.

Does this include San Juan de Gaztelugatxe?

No. That is a separate coastal excursion with transport and access arrangements; it would replace one Bilbao day.

Which museum day should I avoid on Tuesday?

The Fine Arts Museum normally closes Tuesdays. The Guggenheim follows a different weekly pattern, so check both calendars.
