Civic Bologna, the university and San Luca

Use three full days. Book the Archiginnasio visitor route and check the different civic-museum timetables before ordering the days. San Luca uses transport to and from the hill; a complete portico hike would need a different day plan. Hotel, airport and station journeys are additional.

The civic heart and its art

Explore Piazza Maggiore and Neptune Fountain, then San Petronio. After lunch, visit Palazzo d’Accursio and Santa Maria della Vita. Check the palace collection and church calendars first; if their access windows require it, swap the two afternoon visits.

1Historic squares

Piazza Maggiore and Neptune Fountain

Begin with the buildings around Piazza Maggiore, then walk into the adjoining Piazza del Nettuno for the fountain. Treat the connected squares as one introduction to Bologna rather than several separate attractions.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • The square is public space; entrances to surrounding buildings have their own rules

2Basilica

Basilica of San Petronio

Step inside the vast church and take time with its scale and the details accessible to visitors. Any specialist chapel or terrace visit depends on its own admission arrangements.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Religious services take priority; check visitor access and dress appropriately

Midday

LunchTake a seated lunch near the civic squares; a longer tasting tour would replace one afternoon interior.

3Civic palace

Palazzo d’Accursio

Explore the visitor-accessible parts of the city hall and the Municipal Art Collections if open. The allowance is for a focused palace visit; add the clock tower only through a suitable booking or by shortening the collection visit.

  • Plan about 1 h 30 min
  • Check collection and clock-tower schedules separately

4Church and sculpture

Santa Maria della Vita

Visit the church and the sculptural Lamentation group with the appropriate ticket. Leave time to look at the figures closely; an extended visit to every exhibition or upper room is additional.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Check which spaces your ticket includes and their last admission

Evening

DinnerStay in the centre for dinner, with time to wander a short porticoed street afterwards.

Day 2

University, archaeology and music

Begin with your booked Archiginnasio route, then the Archaeological Civic Museum. After lunch, continue to the Santo Stefano complex and the music museum. Keep this day away from the archaeological museum’s normal Tuesday closure and confirm the music museum’s hours as well.

Archiginnasio and Anatomical Theatre

Explore the courtyard and the booked visitor route through the Anatomical Theatre. Include the Stabat Mater Hall when available; the working library is not a general sightseeing area.

  • Plan about 1 h 30 min
  • Book the guided or audioguided visitor route; institutional events can limit rooms

2Archaeological museum

Archaeological Civic Museum

Choose a two-hour route through the collections on display in Palazzo Galvani. This is the civic archaeological museum, including its Egyptian collection when accessible, rather than a second Egyptian museum elsewhere.

  • Plan about 2 h
  • Normally closed Tuesdays; check the ticket-office closing time

Midday

LunchPause for lunch after the archaeological collection; the afternoon stays within the eastern old town.

3Church complex

Santo Stefano and its square

Walk across Piazza Santo Stefano and explore the accessible interconnected religious spaces. The church complex and its square form one stop, with time to appreciate the transitions between courtyards and interiors.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Services and individual rooms can have different visiting arrangements

4Music museum

International Museum and Library of Music

Visit the exhibition rooms in Palazzo Sanguinetti, following the instruments, portraits and documents that interest you most. Research-library access is a separate activity.

  • Plan about 1 h 30 min
  • Check museum opening before choosing the day; events may use some rooms

Evening

DinnerChoose dinner around the historic centre. A concert needs its own ticket and start time.

Day 3

San Luca and the western old town

Travel to San Luca before starting the listed visit, allowing about 50 minutes from the centre for the chosen connection and waiting. After the sanctuary, return to the centre for lunch, then San Francesco and the Medieval Civic Museum. The museum has morning-only opening on some weekdays: on those dates visit it first, then San Francesco and San Luca, arranging transport both ways.

1Hilltop sanctuary and viewpoints

San Luca Sanctuary

Visit the sanctuary and selected viewpoints, with a short section of its porticoed approach. This allowance starts on arrival at the hilltop and does not include walking the entire portico from central Bologna.

  • Plan about 2 h
  • Arrange transport both ways; a complete uphill portico walk needs substantial extra time

Midday

LunchReturn to the centre and take lunch before the basilica. The transfer allowance below belongs before this meal.

Afternoon

Allow about 50 minutes to return from San Luca to the western centre by your chosen local transport, including waiting; take lunch after this transfer.

2Basilica and exterior tombs

Basilica of San Francesco

Return to the western edge of the centre for the basilica and the visible tombs outside. Keep the visit respectful and use an exterior circuit if worship prevents sightseeing.

  • Plan about 45 min
  • The interior is subject to religious use

3City history and art museum

Medieval Civic Museum

Finish with selected medieval objects and monuments in Palazzo Ghisilardi. The compact visit gives context to the buildings explored across the three days.

  • Plan about 1 h 30 min
  • Hours vary by weekday: some days open only in the morning, others in the afternoon

Evening

DinnerFinish with dinner in central Bologna. This plan leaves the full uphill portico walk for a separate outing.

Good to know in Bologna

Book the university and choose museum days

  • The Anatomical Theatre visitor route requires booking. The Stabat Mater Hall and other institutional rooms depend on availability; the working library is not open to general tourists.Source: Bologna Welcome — Archiginnasio · checked Sep 2026
  • The Archaeological Civic Museum normally closes Tuesdays. Check the current hours and last admission for the Palazzo Galvani museum before arranging the university day.Source: Bologna Welcome — Archaeological Museum · checked Sep 2026

Plan the hill and the final museum

  • San Luca is a hilltop sanctuary. The full portico route from Porta Saragozza is several kilometres and uphill; this itinerary instead allows transport and a shorter walk on arrival. Services can limit sightseeing.Source: Bologna Welcome — San Luca · checked Sep 2026
  • The Medieval Civic Museum normally closes Mondays and has different morning or afternoon sessions on other weekdays. Reverse day 3 when its museum window requires it.Source: Bologna Welcome — Medieval Civic Museum · checked Sep 2026

3 days in Bologna: quick answers

Is three days too long for Bologna?

Three full days suit visitors who want the university, selected museums and San Luca as well as the central squares. A food tour or long hike would replace part of this route.

Does the plan climb the Two Towers?

No tower climb is required. Check official visitor arrangements separately if that is a priority and replace another visit rather than adding a climb to a full day.

Can I walk all the way to San Luca?

Yes, if the route and conditions suit you, but this plan budgets transport. Allow substantially more time for the full uphill walk and reduce the museum programme.

Are the museums all closed on the same day?

No. The Archaeological and Medieval Civic Museums have different weekly arrangements, and the latter varies by time of day. Check each calendar.

Is the Egyptian collection a separate stop?

No. It belongs within the Archaeological Civic Museum visit when accessible; it is not counted as a second museum.
