Vieux Lyon, Fourvière and art beside the city parks

Start with three full days and reorder them around museum calendars. Gadagne normally opens Wednesday to Sunday; Lugdunum’s museum closes Mondays and the fine-arts museum Tuesdays. Check collection access as well as the building’s hours. The hill day uses a downhill transport allowance, while the large park gets a selected circuit. Hotel connections, performances and restaurant queues need extra time.

1Historic neighbourhood

Vieux Lyon lanes

Explore a short circuit of the old-town streets and Renaissance façades. Enter a traboule only where public access is explicitly allowed; private doors are not invitations.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Keep noise down in residential passages and courtyards

2Cathedral

Saint-Jean Cathedral

Pause in the square and visit the cathedral when open. The stop allows a short look at the interior without promising a timed clock demonstration.

  • Plan about 30 min
  • Services take priority over visitor access

Musée Cinéma et Miniature

3Cinema and miniature museum

Musée Cinéma et Miniature

Choose a route through film objects and miniature scenes, allowing time to look closely at the details.

  • Plan about 2 h
  • Book or check the official ticket options; a detailed fan visit needs longer

Midday

LunchChoose a seated lunch in Vieux Lyon. Book a restaurant if it matters to you, and avoid a long queue that would cut the Gadagne visit.

Afternoon

4City history and puppetry

Gadagne museums

Use a selected route through the Lyon history or puppetry displays in the Renaissance complex. Two hours means choosing a focus, not completing both museums in depth.

  • Plan about 2 h
  • Normally open Wednesday to Sunday; check last admission

Evening

DinnerStay in the old town for dinner or cross the Saône. A guided traboule tour would replace some of the earlier street walk.

Day 2

Fourvière, Roman Lyon and the Presqu’île

Reach the basilica first, then combine the Lugdunum museum and theatres in a single visit. The museum opens later on weekdays, so start with the basilica and outdoor theatre area if necessary. After lunch, descend using suitable transport and continue to Ainay and Bellecour.

1Basilica and viewpoint

Fourvière Basilica and terrace

Visit the publicly accessible basilica and its terrace, with time for the view over Lyon. The hill viewpoint and basilica share one stop.

  • Plan about 1 h 15 min
  • Services can restrict access; rooftop tours need separate arrangements

2Roman archaeology

Lugdunum museum and Roman theatres

Combine a selected museum route with the neighbouring Roman theatre remains. The museum and archaeological site are counted together, with their different access rules in mind.

  • Plan about 2 h 30 min
  • The museum normally closes Mondays; the outdoor site has its own hours

Midday

LunchHave lunch around the hill visit or after descending. Keep the museum’s indoor time intact rather than spending the entire allowance on the theatre steps.

Afternoon

Allow about 40 minutes for the descent by a suitable funicular or local connection and the approach to Ainay, including waiting.

Basilica of Saint-Martin d’Ainay

After descending from Fourvière, visit the church and its surrounding streets. Appreciate the exterior if services or opening hours prevent an interior visit.

  • Confirm the visitor window before crossing the city

4City square

Place Bellecour

Finish the day on the broad square, taking in the surrounding streets and the view back toward Fourvière. Shopping or café stops are optional additions.

  • Plan about 45 min
  • Use marked crossings around the square

Evening

DinnerChoose dinner around the Presqu’île. An evening show or rooftop tour is a separate booking.

Day 3

Fine art, painted façades and the park

Begin at the fine-arts museum for a focused visit, checking its later Friday opening. Continue through Place des Terreaux and the Fresque des Lyonnais, then travel to the Tête d’Or park for a selected afternoon loop.

Explore the square outside the museum and the fountain as one short stop. The Hôtel de Ville is viewed from the public square.

  • Plan about 30 min
  • Events may change how you cross the square

Midday

LunchTake lunch in the Terreaux area before the mural and park. Check the park’s gate times if daylight is short.

3Public mural

Fresque des Lyonnais

Walk to the painted façade and spend time identifying figures and architectural illusions from the public pavement. This is an exterior stop.

  • Plan about 30 min
  • Keep the pavement and building entrances clear
Allow about 35 minutes for local transport from the mural area to a suitable park entrance, including waiting and walking.

4Large city park

Parc de la Tête d’Or

Use a selected park loop for the lake, paths and gardens after the art museum. The zoo is part of the same park, not another full stop; its enclosures and the greenhouses have separate hours.

  • Plan about 2 h
  • The two-hour plan does not cover every part of the park

Evening

DinnerReturn from the park for dinner. The zoo, lake and gardens share the park visit rather than forming additional full attractions.

3 days in Lyon: quick answers

Is 3 days enough for Lyon?

Three full days fit this museum-and-neighbourhood selection. Croix-Rousse, Confluences and longer food tours need another day or replacements.

Can I enter every traboule?

No. Some passages are private or have restricted public access. Use only clearly permitted entrances, keep quiet and respect residents.

Why are the Roman theatres not a separate stop?

They share the Lugdunum visit, with separate site and museum hours. The combined allowance leaves time for both indoor displays and the adjacent remains.

Can I walk all the way up and down Fourvière?

Yes if the slopes suit you, but allow extra time. The plan leaves the ascent before the first stop and includes a transport allowance for the descent and onward connection.

Does Gadagne mean visiting both museums in full?

No. The two-hour allowance is for a selected route through history or puppetry displays. Add time or reduce another visit for both in depth.
