Málaga’s old town, art, fortified hills and waterfront

Use three full days and arrange them around the weekly museum calendars. Thyssen and the Roman Theatre normally close Mondays; Pompidou normally closes Tuesdays. Reserve Picasso entry and allow for the separate Gibralfaro approach. Hotel and first-stop journeys are additional; Ronda is a separate excursion.

1Historic square

Plaza de la Constitución

Begin in the old town’s central square and look along the streets leading toward the cathedral and Calle Larios. A short circuit establishes the geography before the art museum.

  • Plan about 30 min
  • The square is public space; events can alter the walking route

2Art museum

Carmen Thyssen Museum

Follow a selected route through Spanish painting, with particular attention to the Andalusian scenes. The museum occupies a historic palace, but the collection deserves most of this two-hour stop.

  • Plan about 2 h
  • Normally closed Mondays; check seasonal hours and the selected ticket

Midday

LunchTake lunch in the old town before the cathedral visit.

3Cathedral

Málaga Cathedral

Explore the cathedral’s public visitor route, allowing time for its choir and chapels. This hour is for the interior and immediate surroundings; a rooftop tour is a separate appointment.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Check sightseeing hours around worship; book a roof visit separately

4Pedestrian street

Calle Larios

Walk the length of the broad pedestrian street toward the harbour side of the centre. Pause for the façades and street life without turning the stop into an additional shopping excursion.

  • Plan about 30 min
  • Shops have their own hours; the street walk does not depend on them

Evening

DinnerChoose dinner in the centre, keeping the first day relaxed after the galleries.

Day 2

The Alcazaba and two sides of Picasso

Begin at the Roman Theatre when the visitor route opens, then work uphill through the Alcazaba. After lunch, visit Museo Picasso Málaga, followed by the distinct birthplace museum. Finish in Plaza de la Merced. Book the main Picasso museum for early afternoon so both collections fit.

1Archaeological site

Roman Theatre

See the theatre remains at the foot of the Alcazaba and use the visitor route when open. The compact site introduces the layers of history visible on this side of the old town.

  • Plan about 30 min
  • Normally closed Mondays; begin at the official opening time for site entry

2Fortified palace

Alcazaba

Work through the uphill sequence of gateways, courtyards and palace spaces. Allow two hours inside the complex for the uneven paths, views and pauses, keeping the higher Gibralfaro castle for another day.

  • Plan about 2 h
  • Check the entrance route and last admission; wear shoes suitable for stone paths

Midday

LunchHave a seated lunch near Calle Alcazabilla before your Picasso reservation.

3Art museum

Museo Picasso Málaga

Give the collection a focused two-hour visit inside the Buenavista Palace. Select paintings and sculpture that interest you instead of adding a second palace stop for the same building.

  • Plan about 2 h
  • Choose the correct collection or exhibition ticket and reserve a suitable time

4Biographical museum

Picasso Birthplace Museum

Visit the museum in Picasso’s birthplace beside Plaza de la Merced. Its biographical focus complements the larger art collection at Museo Picasso Málaga, which is a different institution and address.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Check admission and any separate exhibition space before choosing a ticket

5Neighbourhood square

Plaza de la Merced

Pause in the square after the birthplace visit, with time for its monument, façades and a seated break. The square and museum are adjacent but serve different purposes in the day.

  • Plan about 30 min
  • Keep the square pause flexible if a museum reservation changes

Evening

DinnerStay near the northern old town for dinner. Keep any extra exhibition within the museum allowances.

Day 3

Gibralfaro, harbour art and the sea

Allow about 40 minutes before the first stop to reach Gibralfaro from the centre by a suitable bus or taxi connection, or a longer uphill walk. Visit the castle, descend to Málaga Park and take lunch before Pompidou. Finish with an easy Malagueta promenade and beach pause.

1Hilltop castle

Gibralfaro Castle

Follow the castle’s ramparts and permitted visitor spaces for wide views over Málaga and the port. The ninety minutes are for the castle itself; the hilltop approach and descent need separate time.

  • Plan about 1 h 30 min
  • Arrange the uphill journey before the first stop; the Alcazaba has a separate entrance
Allow about 35 minutes to descend from Gibralfaro to Málaga Park by the appropriate public connection or downhill walking route.

2Botanical park walk

Málaga Park

Follow a shaded stretch of the park between the old town and harbour. Look at the planting and fountains, using this as a slower outdoor link after descending from Gibralfaro.

  • Plan about 45 min
  • Use pedestrian crossings between the park and port

Midday

LunchEat near the park or harbour before the contemporary-art visit.

3Modern and contemporary art

Centre Pompidou Málaga

Explore the selected art displays beneath the coloured cube at the harbour. Give the changing programme a proper visit rather than treating the cube alone as the museum.

  • Plan about 2 h
  • Normally closed Tuesdays; check holiday exceptions and current displays

4Beach and promenade

La Malagueta Beach

Finish with a promenade walk and time to sit by the sea. The base plan works without swimming; a longer beach session would replace part of the art or park time.

  • Plan about 1 h 15 min
  • Swimming depends on conditions and local flags; shade and facilities vary by season

Evening

DinnerHave dinner near the waterfront or allow a separate return to your base.

3 days in Málaga: quick answers

Are the two Picasso museums the same place?

No. Museo Picasso Málaga is the art collection in Buenavista Palace; Casa Natal is the birthplace museum beside Plaza de la Merced.

Can I go directly from Alcazaba into Gibralfaro?

Plan separate visitor entrances and an uphill journey. This route gives them different days so neither visit is rushed.

Does this include Ronda?

No. Ronda needs travel and its own excursion day, replacing one of these Málaga days.

Is swimming required on the last day?

No. The promenade and beach pause work without entering the water.

Can I follow these days over Monday and Tuesday?

Reorder the art visits around Thyssen and theatre Monday closures and Pompidou’s normal Tuesday closure.
