Old Nice, Cimiez art and the Bay of Angels

This is a three-day Nice stay, with no Monaco, Èze or Cannes day trip folded into it. Several museums normally close Tuesdays, so use an outdoor version of the seafront day then and move the museum visit to an open day. Check Chagall’s midday break as well as its closing time. Short walks inside parks and larger sites are included in their visit allowances; hotel and airport journeys are extra.

Day 1

The old town, Castle Hill and the harbour

Begin on Cours Saleya, then visit the cathedral and Palais Lascaris. After lunch, climb Castle Hill and descend toward Port Lympia. This is one old-town-to-harbour circuit; the port’s two names do not represent two attractions.

Cours Saleya

Start among the market streets and surrounding façades before the busiest part of the day. Leave time to browse; the type of market depends on the day.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Monday has a different market pattern; check the current city market calendar

Nice Cathedral

Pause in Place Rossetti and visit Sainte-Réparate when the church is open to visitors. The square and cathedral are one compact stop.

  • Plan about 30 min
  • Services and events can limit sightseeing access

3Historic palace museum

Palais Lascaris

Explore the palace interiors and a selected part of its musical-instrument displays. The narrow old-town setting is part of the visit rather than a separate attraction.

  • Plan about 1 h 15 min
  • Normally closed Tuesdays; check access arrangements for stairs

Midday

LunchChoose lunch in the old town before the hill climb. In hot weather, take a shaded break and carry water for the park.

4Hilltop park and viewpoints

Castle Hill park

Climb to the park above the old town and harbour, following a selected viewpoint circuit before descending toward the port. The visit is to the hill and park, not an intact furnished castle.

  • Plan about 1 h 30 min
  • Allow for steps; do not rely on the lift as a guaranteed shortcut

5Harbour walk

Port Lympia

Follow the public quays for views of the boats and the surrounding façades. Nice Port and Port Lympia are one harbour visit.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Stay on public paths and out of working port areas

Evening

DinnerStay around the port or return to the old town for dinner. Keep the park descent within its opening hours.

Day 2

Matisse, Cimiez and Chagall

Start at Musée Matisse and walk through the neighbouring arena and gardens before lunch. Use local transport toward Chagall and arrive after any published midday break. These are two focused museum visits, not a tour of every gallery and archaeological site in Cimiez.

Midday

  • Plan about 2 h
  • Normally closed Tuesdays; check any midday break before setting out

Evening

DinnerReturn to the centre for dinner. Keep the later afternoon free if a museum visit runs longer.

Day 3

Cathedral, villa and seafront

Begin at Saint Nicholas Cathedral when visitor access permits, then reach Musée Masséna for its opening window. After lunch, enjoy a selected promenade stretch and finish in the Paillon gardens. On a Tuesday, use the cathedral exterior, villa garden where open and more outdoor time; move the indoor museum visit to another day.

Promenade des Anglais

Follow a chosen stretch of the promenade, with time for benches and the sea view. Turn back when it suits your pace; the plan does not require walking the full length.

Promenade du Paillon

Finish with a selected section of the green corridor beside the old town. Leave room for shade and a quiet pause after the exposed seafront.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Use the sections open to the public and follow park hours

Evening

3 days in Nice: quick answers

Is 3 days enough for Nice?

Yes for this selection of the old town, harbour, main art museums and seafront. Regional day trips require more days or replacing part of this plan.

Can I visit Matisse and Chagall on Tuesday?

They normally both close Tuesdays. Move the art day and verify the museums’ current calendars.

Is there a castle to tour on Castle Hill?

The stop is a landscaped hill and viewpoint circuit, not an intact furnished castle. Allow time for the ascent and descent.

Does the plan depend on swimming weather?

No. The seafront time is a walk and rest break. Swimming or a beach club is optional and takes time from the walk.

Can I walk between the Cimiez museums?

You can choose a suitable walking route, but this plan allocates local transport so slopes and midday heat do not consume the afternoon museum window.
