Plan the island day first
- Maharashtra Tourism identifies the Gateway as the departure point for Elephanta ferries and notes the island’s steps and weather-dependent sea crossing. The caves normally close Mondays. Confirm operating boats and the last return before buying the day’s tickets.Source: Maharashtra Department of Tourism · checked Sep 2026
- The ferry journey and cave admission are separate parts of the visit. This route allows for both crossings and the island approach; a short toy-train ride on the island does not remove all the steps to the caves.Source: Maharashtra Department of Tourism · checked Sep 2026
Museum and heritage visits
- Use CSMVS visitor information for the current ticket categories, gallery access and visitor rules. A selected two-and-a-half-hour route leaves space for nearby art and architecture without claiming to cover the entire collection.Source: CSMVS · checked Sep 2026
- Mani Bhavan is a separate Gandhi museum visit. Check its current visitor information and leave time to read the displays after the journey across town.Source: Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sangrahalaya · checked Sep 2026

Questions
Quick answers
Are ferry tickets and cave admission the same thing?
Do not assume they are. Check the operator’s boat ticket and the monument’s admission separately, and verify the final return sailing before going inland.
The days these rules belong to
3 days in Mumbai
Arrange the Elephanta day first around the caves’ opening calendar and the ferry conditions, then fit the two city days around it. The museum day stays mainly within Kala Ghoda and Fort; the final day moves from the station and market toward Mani Bhavan and the seafront. Mumbai’s crowds and traffic call for flexible meal breaks and modest walking sections. Ferry delays may shorten Colaba, and heavy rain may replace a promenade walk with time indoors.
