The plan at a glance
Arrange the Elephanta day first around the caves’ opening calendar and the ferry conditions, then fit the two city days around it. The museum day stays mainly within Kala Ghoda and Fort; the final day moves from the station and market toward Mani Bhavan and the seafront. Mumbai’s crowds and traffic call for flexible meal breaks and modest walking sections. Ferry delays may shorten Colaba, and heavy rain may replace a promenade walk with time indoors.
At a glance
Day 1
Start at the Gateway, confirm the ferry operation and take an early sailing to Elephanta. The cave visit is two hours on the island, with separate allowances for both ferry connections. Have lunch before the return journey and leave Colaba as a short, flexible finish.
Morning

Start at the waterfront monument and orient yourself before the Elephanta ferry. The adjoining harbour activity and view of the Taj hotel are part of this short exterior stop.

Explore the main cave’s carved panels and a selected part of the surrounding complex. These two hours cover the island approach, steps and cave visit; ferry travel and queuing are allowed separately in the day’s transfers.
Midday
Afternoon

After returning to the city, take a short walk among Colaba’s shops and street stalls. Keep this final stop flexible if the ferry day runs long; a more extensive shopping visit needs extra time.
Evening
Day 2
Give CSMVS a substantial morning visit before the smaller Jehangir gallery. After lunch, follow a compact route through the cathedral, fountain and university exterior. The public hall housing the modern-art museum and repeated civic monuments are not counted as additional stops.
Morning

Choose a focused route through the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya collections. The museum’s art, archaeology and historic building deserve a substantial visit; trying to cover every gallery would take longer.

Look at the current exhibitions in this separate Kala Ghoda gallery after the larger museum visit. Displays change, so the artists and works on view will depend on your date.
Midday
Afternoon

Pause inside the cathedral when visitor access permits, looking at the memorials and the quieter setting within the Fort district. Worship and services take priority over sightseeing.

See the fountain and adjoining memorial setting as one short exterior stop. Use designated pedestrian crossings to reach viewpoints rather than cutting through traffic for a photograph.

View the university’s clock tower from permitted public space beside the Oval Maidan. This is an exterior architecture stop, not an invitation to enter the university buildings or climb the tower.
Evening
Day 3
Begin with the station’s architecture, then walk toward Crawford Market. After lunch, use transport across to Mani Bhavan. Finish with a selected Marine Drive section; transport to your preferred promenade entry avoids turning the final stop into a long cross-city walk.
Morning

See the station’s monumental exterior and public areas without obstructing commuters. A separate heritage tour or access to restricted rooms is not assumed in this visit.

Explore a selected part of the historic market and nearby shopping lanes. Allow for busy aisles and a slower pace; the visit focuses on the building and everyday trade rather than a long shopping list.
Midday
Afternoon

Visit the former Gandhi residence’s displays, photographs and preserved setting for a more focused historical stop. Allow time to read the exhibits rather than just look at the façade.

End with a manageable walk along part of the curving promenade, with time to sit and watch the bay. The map marks the broad seafront area; there is no need to walk its entire length.

Questions
Three full days cover this South Mumbai selection and Elephanta. Bandra, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Kanheri Caves and specialist tours need additional time or replacements.
Do not try to force the crossing. Swap the two city days if conditions may improve. If the whole visit is unsuitable, use the day for a longer museum visit and a separately researched city activity.
Do not assume they are. Check the operator’s boat ticket and the monument’s admission separately, and verify the final return sailing before going inland.
No. The tower is an exterior view from permitted public space. University interiors, restricted station areas and special heritage tours are not included.
Walk the short Fort and market sections, but use transport for the marked longer links. Crowded streets, traffic and weather can make a small map distance take longer than expected.
