Victoria Memorial
Lord Curzon proposed it the week Victoria died in 1901 and the money came from public subscription across India; William Emerson designed it, the marble came from Makrana in Rajasthan — the same quarry as the Taj Mahal — and it opened in 1921, by which time the capital had already moved to Delhi and the empire it commemorated had begun to come apart. The bronze Angel of Victory on the dome turns in the wind. Inside is a serious museum of Calcutta and the Raj: Company paintings, the Daniell aquatints, Tipu Sultan's possessions, and a gallery on the city's own history that does not flatter anyone.
