The waterfront, Alcatraz, Golden Gate and the Mission

Book the Alcatraz landing trip first and arrange the other days around it. The museum day follows the northeastern waterfront before heading uphill to Coit Tower. The final day starts at the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge, stays on the San Francisco shore and ends in the Mission after a transport connection. The city’s hills and waterfront paths are longer than straight lines on a map; use the stated connections and leave time for weather and queues.

Day 1

The Embarcadero, science and North Beach

Start at the Ferry Building, then give the Exploratorium a full three-hour visit. After lunch, use an uphill connection to Coit Tower before descending toward the Sentinel Building and a short North Beach walk. Check the museum’s day-specific hours first, especially for Sunday or Monday.

Ferry Building and the Embarcadero

Explore the food hall and a short stretch of the waterfront before the museum. A farmers’ market is a bonus when it operates, rather than a required part of this visit.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Individual shops and market days vary

2Science museum

Exploratorium

Give the hands-on exhibits a full three hours, following your interests rather than trying to see everything. This visit is to the waterfront museum at Pier 15; separately ticketed experiences are not assumed.

  • Plan about 3 h
  • Normally closed Mondays; general Sunday admission starts later

Midday

LunchHave lunch around the museum or waterfront before heading uphill. The museum visit is substantial, so leave the afternoon flexible if your group wants longer with the exhibits.

Afternoon

Allow about 30 minutes for a suitable bus/taxi connection and the final uphill approach; a stair route is an optional, more strenuous alternative.

3Viewpoint and murals

Coit Tower

Head up Telegraph Hill for the tower setting, murals where accessible and the paid observation level if available. The climb and queues can slow the visit; use transport if the hill is unsuitable.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Allow a separate uphill connection from the waterfront

4Architecture and neighbourhood walk

Sentinel Building and North Beach

Use the distinctive corner building as an exterior landmark for a short North Beach walk. Its offices are not a visitor attraction; nearby public streets and cafés provide the neighbourhood experience.

  • Plan about 45 min

Evening

DinnerChoose dinner in North Beach. If you have energy, explore a few more nearby streets rather than travelling across town for another attraction.

Day 2

Alcatraz and the northern waterfront

Arrive at Pier 33 for your booked landing trip. The Alcatraz allowance includes the normal round-trip ferry and check-in, so do not add a second ferry excursion. After lunch, take a selected wharf walk and finish at Lombard Street’s crooked block.

Morning

Alcatraz Island

1Island and former prison

Alcatraz Island

Take the official ferry for a focused island visit, including the cellhouse audio tour and selected outdoor areas. The allowance covers the round-trip ferry, normal check-in and island time from Pier 33; extended programmes need longer.

  • Plan about 3 h 30 min
  • Reserve an island-landing ticket in advance; a bay cruise alone does not land here

Midday

LunchHave lunch back on the mainland near the ferry landing or the wharf. Keep food plans flexible around the actual return boat, rather than booking a tight lunch reservation.

Afternoon

After the return ferry already included in the Alcatraz visit, allow about 20 minutes to walk from Pier 33 toward the wharf; this connection is on the mainland.

2Waterfront district

Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39

After the ferry, choose a compact route through the wharf and Pier 39 area. Sea lions may be present, but wildlife sightings are not guaranteed; the aquarium, ships and other paid attractions are optional extras.

  • Plan about 1 h 30 min
  • The walking allowance includes the district’s internal waterfront route

3Street and viewpoint

Lombard Street: the crooked block

See the famous landscaped block from its public sidewalks, taking time for the steep approach. This is a residential street, so keep stairs and doorways clear and avoid stepping into traffic.

  • Plan about 30 min
  • Use transport if the hill is uncomfortable

Evening

DinnerChoose dinner near the waterfront, North Beach or your base. Aquarium entry, a historic ship and additional cruises would need extra time rather than being automatic parts of the wharf walk.

Day 3

Golden Gate shore and a Mission finish

Start at the bridge’s south visitor area and walk only a selected out-and-back section. Continue along the permitted paths toward Crissy Field, then the Palace of Fine Arts. Use transport to the Mission for a relaxed park visit and dinner. The route does not cross the bridge to Marin.

Golden Gate Bridge: south-side visit

Start at the south visitor area and take a short out-and-back walk on the permitted pedestrian sidewalk. The map pin represents the bridge as a whole; this route does not cross to Marin or require a walk to its midpoint.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Approach the south Welcome Center; pedestrians use the east sidewalk during its opening hours

2Waterfront park

Crissy Field

Continue on the permitted paths for a selected shoreline walk with views back toward the bridge. The visit includes a short section of the park, not a full Presidio hike or every coastal viewpoint.

  • Plan about 1 h
  • Expect wind and fog; allow time for the descent from the bridge area

Midday

LunchChoose lunch near the Marina district before or after the Palace of Fine Arts walk. The shoreline section is exposed, so an indoor break is useful in windy weather.

3Architecture and lagoon

Palace of Fine Arts

Walk around the lagoon and rotunda to appreciate the monumental setting. This is an outdoor architecture visit; the building’s theatre and private events have separate access arrangements.

  • Plan about 1 h
Use a suitable bus connection or taxi from the Palace of Fine Arts area to the Mission; allow about 50 minutes including access and traffic.
Mission Dolores Park

4Neighbourhood park

Mission Dolores Park

Use transport to the Mission for a relaxed park visit and a view across the city when the weather is clear. Finish with nearby food options rather than adding another distant museum to the day.

  • Plan about 1 h 15 min
  • The historic Mission church is a separate visit and is not included

Evening

DinnerFinish with dinner in the Mission. The park and nearby streets make a comfortable end without adding another long hill walk or museum.

3 days in San Francisco: quick answers

Is 3 days enough for San Francisco?

Three full days cover this selection. Golden Gate Park’s major museums, Sausalito, Muir Woods and a longer Mission visit need extra time or replacements.

Does any Alcatraz cruise let me visit the island?

No. Book an island-landing ticket with the authorised operator linked by the National Park Service. A sightseeing cruise around the island is a different product.

Does the Golden Gate day cross the entire bridge?

No. It starts on the San Francisco side with a short out-and-back walk. A full crossing and return or a continuation to Sausalito changes the day substantially.

Are the walking distances exact?

They are approximate. Hills, stairways, waterfront paths and the bridge approaches can take longer than a straight-line estimate. Use transport for the marked links and allow more time if walking uphill.

What if Alcatraz tickets are unavailable?

Keep the city days and replace the island visit with a separately planned activity, such as more time at the waterfront or a museum. Do not buy a non-landing cruise expecting it to include the prison visit.
