Tokyo, day by day

Three Tokyo days through Asakusa and Ueno, the shrine and streets of western Tokyo, then the palace gardens and central art districts. Train connections keep distant neighbourhoods from becoming an exhausting cross-city walk.

Temple lanterns to Shibuya lights.

Start with Sensoji and the streets of Asakusa, with time to browse before lunch. Take the subway across the city for Meiji Jingu and a walk towards Harajuku, then continue to Shibuya for the evening.

This is a day of contrasts, not a single walking route. If you want an observation deck, reserve it as your one timed highlight and shorten the shopping stops.

Suggested day: eastern and western Tokyo connected by public transport. Choose a quieter single-area day if you prefer fewer transfers.

Big-city evenings

Shinjuku

For restaurants, city lights and a major transport base. Check your hotel’s station exit: the station area is large.

Temple streets & an earlier start

Asakusa

For mornings around Sensoji and a more traditional streetscape. Allow cross-city travel time for Shibuya and Shinjuku.

Shopping & a central base

Ginza

For department stores and polished shopping streets, with Tokyo Station’s wider area nearby. Our pick for a central shopping-focused stay.

A little planning before you go.

Compare the transport lines in your plan before choosing a pass. For a skyline visit, select an observation deck and time first; do not assume every ticket includes the same floors or rooftop access.

Places and coordinates: Wikidata and Tripwoa's open-data place catalog (Overture Maps Foundation, © OpenStreetMap contributors). Photos: Wikimedia Commons, credited on each image. Practical rules: the official sources linked in each note, checked in September 2026.

How this plan was made: Tripwoa's planner drafted the day order from real coordinates and typical visit times. Each stop was then reviewed, reordered where needed and rewritten with AI assistance. Walking distances are straight-line estimates, so allow a little extra time on real streets.
